Boxing at the Cockfighting Arena

Cockfighters are one of the happiest persons on earth. This is just natural because our sport really make us happy. It gives a lot of energy to our body. Hence, it could boost our health and it serves as immune system to fight sickness. Not only that, sometimes the promoters becomes creative. They have a unique idea how they could entertain the gamefowl afficionados. For example, in the cockpit arena owned by Mapher Alvarez in Luisiana, Laguna, he has round girls.

In this video that  I found out in social media, there’s a friendly game between human, instead of gamecocks. Yes, it is a boxing! It seems that you’re also watching of Manny Pacquaio’s fight. This video was taken by a netizen named Dhel Mairano and according to him this was happened in Antipolo New Coliseum.

Do You Believe in Luck to Win in a Cockfight?

In the whole world, every person living in different places has its own opinion regarding luck. Others have items on their possession that believed to give positive results of whatever wish they had in life, or every competition they joined.

Usually, in financial form that could be possessed otherwise and to prolong the positive outcome whatsoever. For others, luck is not important. It is like superstition that has no scientific explanation. It’s likewise, a negative aspect of their straight personal beliefs.

Some people believed that destiny and fate coincide with their lucky stars that always their motivation of their way of lives. Nonetheless, a fortune-telling that will guide them whatever ways they think possible; hoping that they will become lucky every time they joined every competition.

In cockfighting, other cockers too believed otherwise, but some have notion that luck has no connection with the sport. It is only an expression and a desire to win. You could win through determination and how you prepared for the fight. For them, if you have a good bloodline and taking care very well your chicken, there’s a chance to win in a derby although it is hard to predict who will be the winner. Their point is to work very hard and don’t believe in luck.

Likewise, other cockers believed that luck is vital in joining derbies. Positive results always their motives that can be produced all throughout. Even though cockers have good bloodline and conditioned very well, if there’s no luck, the outcome will be doomed.

In real world of cockfighting, you can’t control the fight of your chicken at all. There’s a possibility that it could be hit in the sensitive part of his body. Your chicken would defeat in a first or second buckle. Like in boxing, remember Ricky Hatton? He was knocked down by Manny Pacquiao in the second round of their fight. Before that, Hatton was very confident to win because he was an undefeated champion. Then, suddenly he was a loss and put himself in a shameful situation.

Actually, cockfighting and boxing is a different sport that to predict beforehand could be non-sense for some people. The fight between chicken is really faster and it only last for seconds or minutes only while in boxing it’s different.

Some cocker who really believed in lucky or lucky charms, amulets or procedures in conditioning, etc., are increasing nowadays. They knew beforehand that each chicken for cockfighting are with bloodlines and conditioned properly for the fight. So, luck is the denominator of everything they do in the cockpit arena.

But some cockers nowadays have more information through the internet that they copied the best procedures in breeding chickens, developed new conditioning techniques and feeding the right amount of feeds every day. Preparation plays a vital role in gaining positive outcome in cockfighting.

Every cockers prepared very well and so, what’s the difference you and with your opponents? If you prepared very well; same with them. They are aware that cockfighting is really tough today compare before. It only means that you need to be lucky to win in a derby.

More cockers believed otherwise, that good preparation beforehand is the best in winning the championship and every derby thereafter. Nothing wrong in believing for luck, fate, destiny, amulets or any other beliefs but one thing for sure; be ready always and condition well the chicken for fighting.

Always remember, if you lose today, for sure you will become lucky tomorrow. So, good luck to all of you; dream, believe and survive.

History of Cockfighting

Photo from ultimatefowl.com

Cockfighting is an oldest form that really exists until today. In recent times, more sport’s concepts are created by many enthusiasts and sportsmen around the world. The most popular are basketball, volleyball, wrestling, boxing, badminton, bowling and other much-to-be-desired games for outdoor and indoor activities.

In ancient times, the first humans venerated the gamefowl bird and treated as sacred especially chicken. By this notion, the ancient people in Greece associated it with their Gods and Goddesses like Apollo, Mars and Mercury. They built temples in honouring the gamefowl for protection from evil spirits. They believed that it can protect their people and warriors in time of war.

Even ancient Rome, the Roman warriors believed that gamefowl were inspirations for their fighting skills, because gamefowl fight until the end. Like Roman captain Themostocles conducted derby before they go at war. He motivated his soldiers by observing the characteristic of the gamefowl bird which is very brave and never surrenders until they die in a battle.

Also, it seems that cockfighting was old as the human civilization. But no one can pinpoint who were the first persons who played cockfighting? We only knew that gamefowl birds were born to be a fighter; braveness was very natural for them.

Other historians believed that cockfighting exists before Jesus Christ was born. In ancient Rome, they made humans as gladiators to fight in the arena. And later, they utilized gamefowl as replacement in fighting. It was a favorite past time of the ancient people and a favorite sport of Julius Caezar that believed as one of the first individuals in Rome who really loved this spectacular sport. As a cockfighting fanatic, he was not only promoted it in his territory and also brought it in England.

Cockfighting in 16th century was relatively popular at once with common people. Even during the term of Henry VIII cockfighting was held at White Hall Palace. It became a national sport in England and breeding and conditioning chickens were taught in exclusives schools. But when Victoria reigned, the cockfighting was already banned. As of now, there are still some gamefowl breeders in that country, although there government don’t recognize cockfighting.

Right now, at present times, cockfighting’s still the popular sports for wealthy and common people. It gets wider audience and getting bigger for it reached-out for every province as their regular leisure time. Some places banned cockfighting and they named it as illegal.

Other people preferred to breed gamefowl only on their places and find cockfighting derby for betting in another area. Likewise, some American cockfighters are visiting the Philippines and Mexico just to join in a derby. They are the true-bloodied cockfighters who can express what they want in life.

More and more American people are hoping that cockfighting would be back in America. Likewise, the Philippines could spread this cockfighting to another level wherein more Filipinos can generate income out of this sport.

Most cockers know that cockfighting is not bad or not a criminal act. It’s just a pastime for some, job for others, but the main objective lies with the personal touch of every cockers.

The Gameness of a Featherless Chicken

Almost of the cockfighters around the world loves good looking chickens. This is our preference when we are selecting materials or to use it as our gamefowl warrior. We love chicken which has a good body conformation and with a medium height.

On the other side, we can't also erase the truth that there are cockers who aren't giving importance to the looks of a chicken. It doesn't matter even the chicken is ugly. For them, the most important  is they have power, gameness and cutting ability or they knew how to defeat their opponents. What is the sense of a good looking chicken if their performance is poor?

Anyway, there is a video that makes round online via social media. This is a match between a normal and featherless chicken. The netizens had been amazed because the featherless chicken shown a great performance. It reminds us the adage which says "Don't judge the book by its cover". We can also say that don't judge the chicken by its looks. Sometimes the physical appearance could be deceiving. This is very true, this is applicable not only to human, but also to chickens.

Baby Canillas of Spanichi Gamefarm

Marcelino “Baby” Canillas believed that breeding chickens is a continual process of learning. He’s from Spanichi Farm located at San Pablo, Laguna. Baby loves chickens during his childhood years and continued to elevate into passion. But before loving these chickens, he actually doesn’t like chickens and kicked it because of its annoying character. Experiences taught him to love chickens and cockfighting is truly the answer.

He was a wide knowledge of the gamefowl industry through his experiences and learning from expert cockers. He applied to his breeding the techniques he learned especially the scientific approach and doesn’t believe in superstitious ways.  You have to prove to him the basis of your techniques before proving the result.

Baby is a full time breeder as livelihood and he focused into his chickens only. He lived inside the farm but built his outdoor office. He considered breeding chickens as serious business and separates the revenues. He used other money for cockfighting but minimizes in betting and finds people to finance for his chickens.

Are you wondering why people called him baby? He’s the youngest among the family members and his parents called him that way. The Canillas family have Spanish roots here in the Philippines because of his physical features as a mestizo. He has a high tone of voice and like other breeders, a gentleman and with word of honor. He liked to be visited in his farm and entertained them.

The name of his farm “Spanichi” came from the word Spanish (Spa) and Chinese (Nichi). He had a Chinese friend who helped him in his farm. As a courtesy, he combined the named of those two races. His bloodlines are composed of Roundhead, Hatch. Oakgrove, Kelso, and others.

A Gamefowl Chicken Fought Without a Gaff?

We already witnessed a lot of fights, but this one is very different. The owner of one of the gamefowl chicken agreed to fight his feathered warrior without a gaff. Many netizens reacted that the owner is really dumb. How does the chicken can protect himself from opponent if he doesn’t have a weapon? Maybe the owner is waiting for a miracle or he is just experimenting. An experiment without assurance that he would become a winner! One thing for sure, the chicken without gaff is really brave because he didn’t run until the fight was over.

Just watch the video to see what would be the result of the fight.

Mayor Juancho Aguirre: A Veteran Gamefowl Breeder

Majority of cockers and breeders around the Philippines considered him as an idol in cockfighting world. His title as an idol is very important because it served as his trademark. Mayor Juancho Aguirre is considered to be one of the legends in Philippine cockfighting industry with his Grey and Lemon Guapo which is very handsome chicken.

Mayor Juancho Aguirre has not been a champion in some prestige derby like Bakbakan and World Slasher Cup, but his chicken used by other cockers won. This cocker was Gene Sola who won in Candelaria International Derby in 2013 and contributed much progression in gamefowl industry.  He introduced bred chickens with a scientific approach because, before, there was no expert breeder at that time. American breeders introduced and revolutionized how to breed and condition chickens properly. Unluckily, not all knowledge that he learned from American breeders were not applicable to the Philippine system. He only chose the best methods that can give positive outcome.

JGA Farm is the farm of Mayor Juancho coming from his initials which is located in Sitio Lunano, Barangay Mailum, Bago City, Negros Occidental bsides to the farm of Hernani Hernandez. How to Care For and Raise Your Own Baby Chickens?

You hаvе nо doubt sееn the cute little fuzzy baby chickens sold аt Easter. Тhеу аrе sо cute and  almost irresistible. Yоu hold them іn your hand and they mаkе chirping noises. Ноw саn уоu resist?

If уоu hаvе the space and decide tо tаkе the plunge then уоu nееd tо bе prepared fоr your  nеw little pets. Yоu wеrе рrоbаblу sold with the statement оf hоw easy іt іs tо tаkе care оf these  little creatures. Νо matter іf уоu buy your baby chickens, hatch them frоm eggs аt hоmе vіа аn incubator оr brooding hens, they dо require sоmе essentials.

What уоu will nееd fоr starting out:

A place tо live. Іn other words, а brooder, оr cage, оr holding box. Тhіs саn bе аs simple аs а plastic container оr cardboard box. Іf raising with а hen, І prefer а cage with а wire bottom sо уоu аrе аblе tо clean mоrе frequently.

A source оf heat. Maintaining temperatures оf 90 degrees the first week and then dropping bу 5 degrees following weeks until уоu reach the temperature outside. Іf they аrе being raised with the mother hen, shе takes care оf the temperature fоr you.

Water and food. Little chicks аrе usuаllу started out оn chick starter іn the medicated оr non-medicated type; and there аrе sеvеrаl brands аvаіlаblе fоr уоu tо choose frоm. Іf the waterer happens tо bе а fairly large size where the chicks саn stand іn the water, sоmе recommend putting marbles іn іt sо the chicks will nоt drown.

Some оf the greatest entertainment соmеs frоm watching these little these chickens grow. And grow they dо! Еvеrу day іt sееms thеrе аrе changes іn features, size, аnd feathers. Ву fіvе tо sіх weeks thеу shоuld hаvе аll thеіr feathers аnd аrе ready tо bе moved frоm thе brooder.

Some things а nеw owner mіght nоt bе aware of:

Chickens hаvе аn area called а crop аnd thеу store feed іn іt tо bе digested. Іt іs located аt thе base оf thе chicken's neck аnd bulges аftеr thе bird hаs eaten. Chickens dоn't hаvе teeth аnd dоn't chew; thе food аnd grit gеt ground uр bу thе crop.

Chickens love dust baths аnd sо dо baby chickens. Yоu mіght sее thеm lying іn thеіr feed (іf thе bowl іs large еnоugh) оr іn thе shavings іn thе bottom оf thе brooder flopping аrоund. Тhіs іs thе bеgіnnіng оf thеіr bathing habits.

A fairly common problem іn newly hatched chicks іs pasting uр. Тhе sign оf pasting іs droppings thаt stick tо thе chick's rear еnd untіl thе vent gеts pasted shut. То ensure thеу dо nоt die frоm thіs, gently wipe thеіr bums wіth а damp, warm paper towel. Ву thе time уоur chicks аrе оnе week оld, pasting uр shоuld nо longer bе а problem.

Chicks dо nоt nееd tо eat аs sооn аs thеу hatch. Fоr thе fіrst twо days оf life thеу саn survive оn residual yoke, whісh іs whу newly hatched chicks аrе аblе tо survive bеіng shipped асrоss thе country.

Pecking order starts young. Тhеу start fluffing uр flapping аt еасh оthеr аnd circling еасh оthеr whіlе thе оthеrs gather аrоund аnd watch. Lооks lіkе thеу аrе dоіng thе tango but nо, thеу аrе determining whо іs thе boss аnd іn whаt order.

Clean water аnd brooder daily. Fоr day оld chicks, lіnе thе bottom wіth paper towels fоr thе fіrst fеw days whіlе thеу gеt thеіr footing tо help avoid leg problems. Тhеn уоu саn switch оvеr tо а couple inches оf pine shavings.

Chickens аrе social animals аnd enjoy bеіng wіth оthеrs. Birds оf а feather flock together.

Chickens аrе vеrу addictive. Wіth thе entertainment thеу offer аnd thе ease оf caring fоr them, уоu will bе ordering online оr bасk аt thе store bеfоrе уоu knоw іt. А little time spent іn preparation will mаkе surе уоur nеw fіrst flock іs аn аll around pleasant experience.

DVH & SONS Gamefarm: A Tradition of Cockfighting

Photo from dvhandsonsgamefarm.com

The DVH & Sons Gamefarm is owned by famous Hinlo Family from Bacolod City, located at Bagong Silang, Salvador San Benedicto in Negros Occidental. The gamefarm is like a forest park with spectacular view around the place. The water falls added the scenic aura, the structures are very organized and a wide area to explore. Raising chickens is very suitable for this place because of its fresh air and good weather condition.

DVH & Sons is producing multitude of breeds every season. The bloodlines came from Billy Abbot and Jimmy East which consists of Kelso, Dan Grey, Roundhead and many others. But their signature bloodline is Black, favorite by Danilo Hinlo. He acquired this Black bloodline from a small time breeder who told him that it came from Gary Gulliam. He favored this bloodline because of its good performance in the cockpit arena. Danilo developed the Blacks that he acquired; he infused it Hatches and Roundhead. He was not wrong with his decision because this bloodline gave him a lot of championships.

Dante Hinlo is like any other cockers who choose their warriors in cockpit arena. He actually based his choice on weight and body conformation of the chicken; a medium body built. He truly believed in luck besides proper management and conditioning in cockfighting because every cocker nowadays is selecting good chicken to be warriors. So, proper conditioning and luck are the two factors he believed in.

The Hinlo Family is famous and already a trademark in Negros, the whole of the Philippines. There are many cockfighters and breeders who are aiming to acquire their bloodlines because they made a lot of good records in derbies.  Once, they became a Breeder of the Year in Negros Gamefowl Breeders Association (NGBA).

The late Danilo Hinlo was the one who started to make a prestige to their family and built their farm. But when he died, his son Dante Hinlo inherited the farm. But of course, when his father was still alive; they were back to back every time there was a derby. Dante really admired his father because it taught him a lot in many aspects from chicken breeding to cockfighting. The good thing also, the son of Dante named Paul has also an interest in chicken. This is not surprising anymore because he has been exposed at an early age in cockfighting. So, the tradition of family Hinlo will continue in the future.

The father of Dante Hinlo was the one who started the prestige of the family. But when he died, Dante inherited the farm. His memories still lingered on to Dante, when he and his father were back to back every time there was a derby. He admired his father because of his teaching in cockfighting industry and also the good aspects of breeding chickens. His son, Paul Hinlo has an interest in chickens too because of his exposure to chickens during his growing years. So, the tradition lives on for Hinlo Family.

Rey Briones: A Champion Game Fowl Breeder

Photo from Sabong Nation
A World Slasher Champion in 2003 and became popular breeders since then; many was surprised for his win because only the big time were winning at World Slasher  Cup at that time. Luckily, he won again for two consecutive years in 2011 and 2012. Before these wins, he’s a two-time runner-up with a score of 7 wins and 1 lost of this derby in 2005 and 2009.

His name is Rey Briones who proved to the cockfighting world that his chicken breeds were really great. His natural talent in chicken breeding and conditioning were truly applicable because of his wins.

His Spartan Farm derived from gladiator of ancient times in Rome wherein, Rey Briones thought otherwise that his chickens are very suited for this name – very brave, have unique strength and fight like gladiators inside the cockpit arena. Besides, his favorite movie is Spartacus.

Rey’s a tabloid newspaper executive and a columnist. He’s very familiar with regular readership everyday and a cockfighting enthusiast dreaming to win in a big derby. He considered himself as a marginalized breeder because during that time his conditioning area was only about 54 hectares. He had only a few chickens, unlike today that he has many chickens, about more than two thousands. He preferred chickens coming from Negros when he first fought in World Slasher Cup. He’s very confident for a win in every cockfighting derby.

The rest is history for him when he first won the World Slasher Cup in 2003. He gave inspiration to marginalized breeder to continue their journey in cockfighting industry. Engr. Sonnie Magtibay who is also a World Slasher Champion followed the footsteps of Rey Briones.

In World Slasher Cup, there’s no champion before he became a winner, but when he won that also the time that new breeders are making a new record in that prestige derby. From being unknown they become a famous in an instant and that was happening to him. He expanded his farm from the winning !

His farm is located at San Miguel Bulacan, it is almost at the foot of Sierra Madre. As of now, he doesn’t buy chicken in Negros because he already established himself as a breeder. As a matter of fact, he has his own signature bloodline like Spartan Red, Spartan White, Spartan Bulik, Spartan Black and Spartan Gold. It is composed of different chickens like Dink Fair, Perry Hatch, Roundhead and msny others.

Richard Bates: A Different Approach in Game Fowl Breeding

As one of the legend of cockfighting and very close to Filipino cockers, Ricahrd Bates lived in the Philippines and breeds several bloodlines for Paul Estrellado. People admired him for his expertise in cock breeding. Staying in the Philippines gained him many friends in cockfighting scene; from ordinary cockers to big time cockers.

Richard’s upbringing during childhood (playing chicken of his father – also a cocker) kept inside his heart while keeping chicken until he grew up and became his hobby. He loved chickens so much and considered it as part of his life. Cockfighting as a sport brought new motivation for him until competing from other cockers was a passion. He wanted to win in every competition and he bred his own cocks as fighters. He dedicated his life for this sport until the age of 76 years old.

When he was still alive, he was a champion in some derbies and more people were asking about his secret. But there’s nothing about it that can be depend upon as he answered them, “I only breeds chicken with my intuition and followed the proper care and training. Well, some I believed, trial and error, and make the best as I can. Bloodline is not an issue for me but also important. The main thing is the cock fighters are good in the arena trained by myself.”  Commitment to his passion was the only reason to survive in cockfighting world. A breeder must be always successful if they put their heart in a right place. Sincerity for your passion was another thing for him.

The negative aspect of Richard’s ways to breed chickens – he didn’t know what were the bloodlines of his bred. He didn’t put much time to know it neither. He preferred the performance in the cockpit than knowing it. But he knew how the characteristic of each chicken with good performance; small head with long feathers and beautiful-bold body. It must be masculine-type of cock fighters all throughout.

He did not believe that there was a pure bloodline and duplication was not an option. There was no throwback in chicken breeding and only laughed when people were depressed because of the bloodlines. He has of course, very different way in breeding chicken but it showed during his career. We can’t ignore his principle isn’t it?

Nene Abello acquired his bloodlines from Harold Brown and Carol Nesmith in the 80’s that were partnered in major derbies around the United States. The two ended their partnership but Nene Abello already got the Sweater bloodlines from them. His perception was proved to be true because it totally compete in the Philippine cockfighting scene.

The Sweater bloodlines came from Carol Nesmith; the Green legged for Harold Brown and got the Roundhead chickens from his friend Ray Alexander. He crossed these bloodlines and the result was very impressive. He wanted to make signature bloodlines from the inventory because it’s getting harder for every competition he joined. He has to maintain his reputation as a good breeder all along the industry.

His brother and son lived in Dallas, Fort Worth area where Nene Abello always visiting Ray Hoskins. He also bred Hatches by Mr. Brown. Mel Sims: A Legacy in Cockfighting

Many breeders have acquired his chicken when he’s still alive and that’s Mel Sims who had been a part of American gamefowl history. They believed that his bred have winning bloodline through many years.

During his childhood years, a Filipino neighbor introduced him in cockfighting and influenced him to raised chickens. The Filipino neighbor offered him to buy a chicken for 5 dollars. It was beautiful and he’s interested to get it. Since then, Mel Sims continued to breed chickens until he grew up – until his body grew weak.

He became famous in a gamefowl industry; from America to Mexico and other part of the world. His name became a household phenomenon in the Philippines for many breeders. As a cockfighter, he gained lots of championship derbies like the Intercontinental Derby (Mexico vs. USA), Golden Rooster gold trophy and cocker of the Year in America.

Mel Sims’s style of breeding consists of few four (4) bloodlines only and maintained in his farm like Hatch, Grey, Red and Kelso. He acquired the Kelso from one of the legendary cockers of America, his friend Duke Hulsey. He carefully chose and infused his breeds for the right combination, so as not to get a mix-up of bloodlines. He preferred chicken with beautiful eyes, feather and medium size body.

He joined the World Slasher Cup in the Philippines during the 90’s. He made a good fight from this prestigious derby but did not get the championship. Mel Sims was impressed by the Filipino culture because of its hospitable people and dedicated to cockfighting. Like many foreigners who visited the Philippines – a true paradise for cockers. He made friends with Filipino breeders and introduced his breeds to them. That’s why his chickens are all over the country.

He died being a true cocker and his legacy in cockfighting is still alive among breeders. They really love the breed Hatch of Mel Sims than other bloodlines because of its great performance in the cockpit arena.

The Power of Bantam Chicken

A bantam (Indonesian: Ayam kate) is a small variety of poultry especially chickens. Etymologically, the name bantam is derived from the city of Bantam - currently known as "Banten Province" or previously "Banten Residency" - once a major seaport, in Indonesia. European sailors restocking on live fowl for sea journeys found the small native breeds of chicken in Southeast Asia to be useful, and any such small poultry came to be known as a bantam.

Most large chicken breeds have a bantam counterpart, sometimes referred to as a miniature. Miniatures are usually one-fifth to one-quarter the size of the standard breed, but they are expected to exhibit all of the standard breed's characteristics.

Have you watch or participates in Bantam derby? Bantam chicken is cute and unique; but if you see it, you’ll think that it’s a weak kind. Cockfighting for bantams is really true but very different of course. If you compare Bantam derby to human, it seems it is fight between children. Bantam derby is truly amazing to watch with small gaff and low in weight. The system of the game is almost the same to the normal derby.

Bantam chickens are not brave as big chickens. They don’t have an instinct to kill their opponents and some of them are running in the midst of the fight. But there is also bantam chicken which is very strong and always ready to battle. Other breeders are crossing with Hatch, Sweater, lemon, Albany or any bloodline they could think; the experiment still going strong for this kind of breeding.

There are some breeders concentrating with Bantam lines. Because they believe that they can establish their names through bantam derby. They know that they have a lot of competitors in a normal derby. But in bantam derby, they have a chance to shine. In the Philippines this is very popular in Pampanga, Tarlac and in other provinces. There are also associations dedicated for Bantam breeders and cockers.

The Bantam story is popular as David and Goliath - evidence that size doesn't matter in cockfighting. Before basketball, wrestling, mixed martial arts and others sports were becoming popular, the cockfighting was already there in Pampanga. It seems that this was old as the human civilization. But no one can pinpoint who were the first persons who played cockfighting? We only knew that gamefowl birds were born to fight.

His name is Patrick Antonio, a 6th time World Slasher Cup Champion and a consistent contender in that prestige derby. He’s always joining in other big derbies like Candelaria International Derby, BAKBAKAN, NCA and many more.

He’s famous in every part of the Philippines; his name has always been cited in every gathering and set as an example of a good chicken man. He’s a hands-on kind of breeder in every fight and the one who put his gamefowl on cockpit arena. Other cockers are not doing this because they’re afraid to be hit by the gaff of their chicken.

He achieved many championships and making noise in the world of cockfighting since 1980’s. Of course, like any other sports, losing is not an option. Winning is always the focus and first priority of his cockfighting endeavor. But sometimes, unlucky, it came once in a while but it doesn’t affect his popularity.

He has a gamefowl product called Sagupaan wherein, his fans also using it. Patrick Antonio was already an established name because he’s very good in terms of chicken selection. He knows how to work with chickens and trained to be more competitive through good performance. Patrick is a breeder with good bloodlines and many more.

Why other big time breeders are not good as Patrick?

Patrick Antonio answered, “Resources are a big factor in chicken breeding but exploring natural talent to be successful is tough.” Other believed that not all chickens on his farm are his own but instead buying from other breeders and trained it to his farm.

In person, Patrick is very calm but not snobbish. Others call him “idol” but he will only smile to them. A very popular man but he always stays his foot on the ground. Patrick is not boastful but also a good cocker-breeder with good heart, that’s why his kindness paved him to be a politician.

Robie Yu Panis,Princess of Philippine Cockfighting

She’s beautiful with natural charisma but notorious in cockfighting world. Some knew her as humble and kind that every cocker would love. She’s already featured in various TV programs and magazines. She is no other than Robie Yu Panis, the Lady Gaffer star.

She was recruited by Biboy Enriquez to work as a farm receptionist estimating the client status, replying to all inquiries and was promoted as farm manager – overall in-charge of the operations of Firebird Farm. Before, Robie worked as a receptionist in a fitness center and a hotel owned by Biboy. once she dreamed to be a flight attendant. She was amazed why she’s part of the cockfighting industry but never regretted because she’s earning decent income with her current job.

Robie was a lady gaffer - usually a male job in cockpit arena. But why she’s doing this work? It’s a chance of a lifetime for beautiful lady like her. Biboy Enriquez enrolled her in a seminar with Teddy Tanchanco and one of the subjects is about gaffing. She’s undergoing gaffing lessons of course by the veteran gaffers like Jun Gayosa, Noli Estrellado and Albert Margen. Now, she was known as the first lady gaffer in the Philippines while others call her Queen Gaffer. She’ll be happier if you’ll call her Princess Gaffer. Biboy Enriquez was fond of recruiting lady workers to his farm.

Robie Yu Panis Firebird Gamefarm’s gaffer was always seen holding her gaffing materials every cockfighting session. Male cockers were astounded by her gaffer skills and also her beauty, but beware she’s tough. There are some cockers who underestimate and teasing her because cockfighting is a men’s sport. Her reason was, “If men could gaff, the lady’s too!”  But according to her, it’s not matter what’s your sex preference, the important is you could do a good job. There’s nothing special with a lady gaffer, but the skills and good touch in chicken counts a lot. At first fight, she also feels nervous but she becomes aggressive in their next fight. Like a soldier when gets wounded, she will be fighting more and more.

Carol Nesmith: An Excellent Gamefowl Breeder in America

The passion to become a breeder is a lifetime journey and you’re always will be. Changes came to our lives and temporarily stopped but it will soon come back because of loving the sport. Carol Nesmith story’s like this one had inspired many cockers around the world. He lived in Blackwater Farm at Novou, Alabama in USA and stopped breeding but he came back because he felt that life without it is not complete.

Also, Carol is considered as one of the legends in American gamefowl scene. His ranking status was next to late Mel Sims and Johnnie Jumper in which as his close friends, they considered them as his idols. They were acquiring chickens from their farms instead of competing while helping each other.

When he’s still a child, he loved cockfighting like other breeders and cockers. He started joining cockfighting in their area until major derbies. He travelled from cockpits to cockpits during his younger years and made good performance. He visited the Philippines for World Slasher Cup, won and made a record. It only shows that his breeding techniques were productive and knows how to produce the best bloodlines. A big time breeder in the Philippines, Biboy Enriquez got his Super Sweater from Carol Nesmith.

Carol Nesmith loves to visit the Philippines because he considered as a haven for cockfighters in the world. Gamefowl industry’s alive in the Philippines and admired its culture. Philippines is a very active country when it comes to cockfighting. Aside from joining World Slasher Cup, he already attended at the World Gamefowl Expo and bid his chicken in this big event. Last time, he also attended the first Gamefowl Festival.

Carol Nesmith’s getting older at 60 but this is not a hindrance to work in his farm. Breeding chickens makes him feel younger and very able to continue what his passion for life. The energy it gets and the successful derbies were far more as a form of exercise. His physical appearance looks good and never worries about retiring someday from breeding. He will pass the inheritance to his son Chris Nesmith – also a breeder like his father. Besides, he has a grandson named Nick who’s also like chicken….what a bloodline!

The Undying Love of a Cocker

This poem is dedicated to all the gamefowl enthusiast around the globe.

The love of cocker is fearless
Ever ready to fight like a feathered warrior
Wounded but never defeated
Until my last heartbeat I am with you!

The love of cocker is tenderness
Night and day, I will hold you tenderly
My love for you is like a fervent prayer
I wish to heaven the life everlasting.

If you love me, undying care I will give
Together with my cocks, we feel the happiness to live
Do not be jealous of them because you are special
You are their Queen and they’ll love you forevermore.

What others will say, do not be deceived
You only had to suffer with me from time to time
Because I was a gambler, always in a cockpit
Betting for my cocks instead of feeding my family?

I’m a Beast…brutal and cruel!
So I forbid you to be with me
Once we’re united I said unto thee harsh
Indeed, what a judgmental beast!

But that's just mere rumors
They’re just wagging their tongues
Only, they not fully understand the cockfighting
It's a sport not just gambling as what they thought.

If I'm willing to gamble madly
Not money, I would risk to bet my honor and integrity
They know they are losing their vices
You can tell the world how sweet to love a cocker!

Promise, in my care, you’ll never have misery
I will put out the doubt and mistaken idea on you
I can prove to you that I am a true person

As long as you love me, you’ve happiness forevermore!

Mamie Lacson,Premier Gamefowl Breeder in the Philippines

Emmanuel "Mamie" Lacson is one of the first premier gamefowl breeder in the Philippines and one of the big man of cockfighting before. He was influenced by his uncle Don Ramon Lacson anf Don Basikli Lopez. When he was in college, he started to learn on how to breed chicken.Until he costructed his own gamefarm inside the sugar plantation of Hacienda Zaragosa located at Maao, Negros Occidental. Later, he transfrred his gamefarm in Mambukal, Murcia in the land owned by his wife.

Harold Brown, the American breeder helped Mamie in layouting of his farm and he called it Cirle L Gamefarm. He knew this American breeder in the year 1964 and until then, he became his mentor in gamefowl breeding. Because of his connection with Harold Brown, he got an accest with Curtis Black, Johnnie Jumper, Oscar Akins and other American Breeders. They got his broodstock from them. Of course, he got cocks from Harold Brown.

It's Mamie who's known as the father of the gamefowl breeders association created in Negros, including the United Negros Breeders Association (UNEGBA) who made the  first derby circuit in Bacolod City. This association also hosted the Western Visayas International Derby in which Mamie participated together with Richard Bates who presented as a runner-up.

In 1980, Mamie created the Negros Gamefowl Breeders Associoation (NGBA) that he managed for 2 consecutive terms. The NGBA organized the first stag derbies outside Manila. In the year 1992, he founded the Gamefowl Breeders Association of Negros GFBAN). He led this association for two terms.

One of the championship that Mamie won was in First National Breeders 6-Stag Derby in Teresa Square Garden. He gor a perfect score using his feather warriors that he called "Black Stags" show of Bleface Mclean Hatches and Hatch Grey.

Mamie Lacson died in the year 2000 while serving as lay minister in one of the church in Bacolod City. Before he died, he served as head of GFBAN's advisory Group. To prove that until his last breath,he has the blood of being a cock breeder. He was long gone but his name etched in the history of cockfighting in the Philippines. Joey Lacson, his son, inherited the Circle L Gamefarm and continued its journey in the cockfighting world.

World Slasher Cup: The Dream Derby for Cockers

The World Slasher Cup is considered to be the first International Derby in the Philippines. It’s held two times in a year during May and June. It was headed by Nene Araneta whose famous not only in business but also in cockfighting. The World Slasher Cup was attended by Filipino and foreign cock breeders.

Smart Araneta Coliseum’s the venue for the event and it lasts in a week, from 8-cock to 9-cock derby. It means that it gets stronger for the passing of time.

The presscon of World Slasher Cup usually held at Gateway Mall and in Balai, near the Farmers Plaza in front of EDSA. If you’re on a media group, it’s very amazing to attend because Nene Araneta brought some beauty contestants for Binibining Pilipinas or international beauty contest. The beautiful women were holding cocks while the ritual of World Slasher Cup’s going on. This ritual’s done a day before the start of derby. The presence of Dicky Lim, Nene Abello, Engr. Sonny Lago, Boy Marzo were prominent and other guests too.

Before, it was only the big time cockers were winning on this derby like Peping Cojuangco, Patrick Antonio and others. But when Rey Briones of Spartan Famefarm won, it changed the course of the cup derby because it gave other cockers a chance to win. According to Tata Rey Briones, he’s from marginalized cock breeder, but because of World Slasher Cup, his cockfighting career moved higher. He elevated his small gamefarm into a huge one while using his win. And, while he’s famous, more breeders were buying his fighter cocks. He proved that it’s not a chance in winning the cup once but for many times and that because of his bred-cocks.

Aside from Tata Rey, a non-famous breeder Engr. Sonny Magtibay of Red Cobra Gamefarm also won the cup. But before his streak, he’s a financier of Boy Tanyag of CRB Gamefarm, then, won in BAKBAKAN. Also, because of Engr. Magtibay’s win, big gamefowl feeds company got him as product endorser. Even though Engr. Magtibay won only once in World Slasher Cup, the prestige being a champion; it’s already etched in the history of cockfighting.

There were more simple cockers participated in this event but they find their own financiers. If not, they coordinated financially to be with this derby because the pot money was huge enough for them; but for big-time cockers, the pot money’s just “chicken feed.” Whoever cockers you ask, for sure they’ll answer - they dream to become World Slasher Cup Champion!
